Coders will review clinical documentation and diagnostic results to extract data and apply appropriate ICD and CPT codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research, and regulatory compliance.  Under the direction of a Coding Manager, they will accurately code inpatient records; however, may need to also code outpatient, emergency room and/or diagnostic records when needed.    





A.  Education:                                                


·         High School Diploma or equivalent

·        Completion of Acute Care Medical Coder program from an accredited institution or Graduate of an AHIMA accredited Associate's (RHIT) or Bachelor's (RHIA) Degree program


B.  Experience:                                  


  • Min. 3 yrs. exp. in healthcare, including 2 years Hospital Coding experience required.  Will consider HIM Vendor exp. in lieu of healthcare exp.
  • Min. 1 year inpatient coding exp.
  • Proficient in ER, Diagnostic, and Outpatient Surgical Coding
  • Knowledge of :
    • ICD & CPT coding schemes
    • medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and the pathology of disease required
    • health information management functions and computer operations
  • Able to communicate effectively in English
  • Basic desktop computer and HIM computer applications skills
  • Knowledge of automated Encoder and Clinical Abstracting Systems


C.  Certification/Licensure:    


Certified with a minimum of one of the following:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
